LTO Tape History

Since the launch of LTO Ultrium tape media in early 2000 we have been supplying LTO based tape drives, libraries, autoloaders and backup software along with the LTO tapes.  In the world today we have seen a decline in LTO products as organisations have chosen alternative technologies.  We still feel tape has a role in I.T. and if you want to know why click here?

We provide LTO Ultrium tapes from HPE, IBM, Quantum, Sony, FujiFilm.  If you are after another tape brand then please call us.

LTO uses

When LTO tape was first developed it was in direct competition with Quantum DLT which was the market leader.  Developed initially by HP, IBM and Seagate these companies finally beat Quantum to become the defacto tape media for the next 20 years.  Seagate sold their tape business to Quantum and since then HP, IBM and Quantum have continued to develop LTO products.  LTO tape was designed as a removable backup media that could be taken offsite and stored.  As capacities rose so did the use cases, the next phase of development was using LTO media for archiving purposes with an archive life of 20+ years it proved highly successful.  Due to nature of archiving LTO WORM tape was developed to prevent overwriting or tampering with the media once the tape has been written.  Since LTO-5 IBM developed LTFS (Linear Tape File System) which is a self-describing file system stored on an LTO Ultrium tape.   LTFS allows LTO tapes to be seen by the operating system (Windows, Linux, OSX) as a large USB.  LTFS does not require backup software and is primarily used in the media and entertainment industry as a data interchange media.
